Rusty, dusty and a little bit crusty. Maybe so, but this John Deere 999 two-row planter is also an important piece of agricultural and Kirchenwitz family history. Built in 1913, Lisa’s family used this to plant corn for years. We don’t know who in the family initially bought it, but Lisa’s dad remembers his father using it when he was a kid. When Farmer Kirchenwitz first started farming in 1970, he began using it himself to plant his first crops. This year, Lisa will be using it to plant sweet corn and maybe more. Original cast iron plates latch onto the planter to drop seeds into the ground.
